Animal Mama Shelter: Our Mission to Rescue and Rehabilitate

Founded by Yulia Khouri upon her arrival in Cambodia in 2010, Animal Mama began as an individual heartfelt response to the dire conditions faced by community and street animals. Though having no formal background in animal care, faced with massive numbers of homeless animals, Yulia took it upon herself to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals suffering from desease, neglect, abuse, or abandonment. This initiative quickly escalated from individual rescue efforts to a comprehensive mission involving hundreds of animals, ranging from street cats and dogs to wildlife ensnared in the inhumane pet trade. Her rescue endeavors led her to collaborations with notable organizations like Wildlife Alliance.

The Evolution into Animal Mama Shelter

By 2016, Yulia’s personal commitment had expanded significantly with over 200 rescued animals at her residence, effectively transforming it into a full-scale animal shelter. This rapid expansion highlighted the urgent need for professional animal welfare team and Golden Standard veterinary services (unavailable in Cambodia then) and led to the establishment of the Animal Mama Clinic and Center for Animal Well-Being.

Current Operations and Impact

Today, the Animal Mama Shelter serves as a sanctuary for numerous animals rescued from the streets and the horrific dog meat trade (DMT). The shelter focuses on providing a safe haven for animals who, due to disabilities or trauma, are deemed unadoptable alongside those who were successfully rehabilitated and are now excellent candidates for adoption or fostering.

Services and Support

All animals at the shelter receive comprehensive care and support from the Animal Mama Hospital, ensuring they live out their lives in health and happiness. The shelter’s operations include:

- Veterinary Care: Providing top-notch medical, surgical, and rehabilitative services to address the complex health issues faced by rescued animals.

- Rehabilitation Programs: Tailored rehabilitation programs designed to help animals recover physically and emotionally, preparing them for adoption when possible.

- Community Engagement: Active involvement in community education to foster awareness about animal welfare and promote responsible pet ownership and importance of fostering and adoption.

- Adoption and Fostering: A dedicated program to match rehabilitated animals with loving homes, enhancing their quality of life and integrating them into caring environments.

Impact of Animal Mama Shelter Project

Since 2010, 1000s of animals were rescued, treated, rehabilitated and found new homes through Animal Mama shelter, including many dogs rescued from Dog Meat Trade, wildlife and domestic animals. Animal Mama Shelter exemplifies a successful transition from individual action to a structured organizational and country-wide effort that significantly impacts animal welfare in Cambodia. Through Yulia’s visionary leadership and the community’s support, Animal Mama continues to expand its reach, ensuring that even the most vulnerable animals have a chance at a better life. The project not only alleviates animal suffering, but also enriches the human community through compassion and education, embodying a holistic approach to public health and animal welfare.
