Founded in 2017 by Yulia Khouri, Home of Heroes is a dedicated retirement sanctuary for de-mining dogs in Cambodia. These dogs have spent their careers performing one of the most dangerous tasks—detecting and disarming landmines to protect human lives. Even in retirement, these dogs continue to serve, engaging in educational programs and even participating in blood donation drives to help other animals in need.
Animal Mama Hospital is a proud supporter of Home of Heroes, recognizing the significant impact these dogs have had on both animal and human communities. Our involvement ensures these heroes receive the respect and care they deserve after years of service.
“When I adopted the demining dog called Murielle who was set to be euthanized, because she couldn’t continue her work in demining, I realized the urgent need for change for all working dogs. That’s when I decided to create Home of Heroes, a retirement haven ensuring these hero dogs live out their days with proper care and dignity.”
Guardian of Heroes – is a program for a very selected group of people who are willing to foster one of our Retired Demining Dogs. The aim of this program is 3-fold:
To match a retired demining dog with a family, so the dog(s) spends their retirement in a home, love, care feeling like a pet.
To ensure that while the dogs are in a family, strict monthly monitoring and evaluation (medical & well-being) of the dogs are carried out by Home of Heroes team and Animal Mama Siem Reap in agreement with the family.
To ensure that every Hero dog will always have the best medical care from Animal Mama (free of charge for the rest of the dogs lives), so no Hero Dog will ever face a "convenience euthanasia", euthanasia due to unaffordable vet bills or mistreatment in adoption families or even end up in DMT (both of which we have seen many times).
